Fed: Deal to sell uranium will lead to more nuclear weapons
The Australian Greens have accused the government of fostering an arms race in our
region by selling uranium to India.
Greens leader BOB BROWN says Indian government's already made it clear Australia's
uranium will free up their own uranium to go into nuclear weapons.
Senator BROWN says the decision's fostering tensions with India's rival Pakistan ..
which also wants our uranium.
JOHN HOWARD announced an in-principle agreement to export uranium to India last night
.. despite the country refusing to sign the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.
The prime minister says the exports will be subject to strict conditions .. including
guarantees the uranium would only be used for generating electricity.
Fairfax papers also report an agreement to sell uranium to Russia could be finalised
next month when President VLADIMIR PUTIN visits Australia for the APEC summit.
Senator BROWN says any deal with Russia could spark a nuclear arms race in the region
.. with Russia supplying nuclear technology to Iran and Burma.
